Beware the “easy” button
March 30th, 2008 by Tess
The site’s been down for about 36 hours because I foolishly ignored everything experience has taught me and fell for the “Just click this link and we’ll take care of everything for you” ploy.
My server has a service that would, theoretically, update the Wordpress software without me having to do anything except ask them, pretty please with sugar on top, if they’d do it.
And, again theoretically, it all would’ve worked fine if I hadn’t made any changes to the software- no database updates, no template changes, no fiddling at all.
And being an inveterate fiddler from way back, I would’ve known that this was not the option for me if they’d just pointed this out.
But I clicked the link, thereby giving the server an embolism.
So after much effort we’re back, albeit on the same version of the software as when we started.
Proper posts tomorrow. For tonight, a glass of wine to go with my whine and off to recover.
G’night, all…
