So I received notice that there was something new up on a particular YouTube channel. That led me to look at my other subscriptions, one of which is to Andrew & Tui.
Andrew is a Kiwi living in Kansas and Tui is the African Grey he’s trained since she was hatched. She clearly has his accent, which makes all of this doubly cute.
So I ended up watching every damn video on there. Again.
Alison came in shouted in her most parental voice: “No! Absolutely not! Turn that off! You’re not allowed to watch that! It’s bad for you! You know how televisions have those chips to block inappropriate material? I need one of those for your computer!”
She quietly added, “You’re just making yourself sad, mom.”
And, yeah, it does make me a little sad, but I continue to be amazed at what they’re capable of. There’s actual understanding there.
You can’t tell me he doesn’t realize he’s baiting Andrew:
If you go to his channel you’ll find lots more, including videos showing how he’s done all this. I’m not sure I agree with 100% of it- he hates their ’squeal,’ and has trained her (largely) out of it. He rationalizes this by saying it’s encouraged her to talk to communicate, rather than using jungle noises he as a human can’t interpret.
Still, the results are amazing, so what do I know?
