Alison’s alternatives
June 5th, 2008 by Tess
Alison is in the “get another bird” camp, with a few caveats:
1)She wants to be involved in choosing the bird
2)It should be “friendly”
3)It should be “fun.”
4)She wants to be involved in choosing the bird
5)She’d like it to be more colorful.
6)She doesn’t think I should be so hung up on intelligence
7)She wants to be involved in choosing the bird.
To sum it up: Not a Grey.
And she should have oversight. Obviously.
She came to a bird show with me a while back and fell in love with caiques. I think it’s the law that every publication that mentions them MUST call them “the clowns of the parrot world:”
My take:
Pros: Cute, colorful, always playing, including that excited jumping business in the video.
Cons: Pricey (therefore Alison’s favorite). Not talkers. Nippy. ALWAYS playing and needing interaction. Not a Grey. Plus, I hate *#&!# clowns.
The other contender is either a Meyer’s or a Senegal:
My take:
Pros: Cuddly, likes to be petted, happy to be handled. Quiet. Likes to play. Able to amuse himself. Inexpensive
Cons: Not a great talker. Sorta conceited- they’re not really interested in being taught, they’d prefer you simply admire them and go along with their game plan. Not a Grey.
We’re at an impasse…I’m not going to be happy with anything other than a grey, although I do see the allure of a “clowinish” (argh) bird. It’s looking more like a small flock is the answer…one grey, one other.
