Mardi Gras day, 1967-style
The latest bunch of eBay photos have a few really interesting shots, though most are of your typical floats and such- a couple in from Seattle for Mardi Gras.
There are two that caught my attention, though- the first is just how different Bourbon Street was… hats, coats, kerchiefs… totally civilized. Shockingly so, really:

I’d love to know where this was, who they were, what the celebration was. And mostly I’d like to know how a couple of tourists who, as far as I can tell, did not stray off Bourbon and Canal got to something like this.
And then I’d like to go, too.
Lots of neon on Canal St, 1960
This is another eBay ‘slide.’ It was listed as a group of older New Orleans slides, but they arrived burned onto a CD with no originals and I discovered he sells them over and over, retaining the rights. So while I don’t actually “own” this, it seems to be okay as per the TOS to post as long as I give credit and don’t get paid. I surely don’t get paid for the blog, and here’s the link to the seller.
I’m not really sure how I feel about this whole process, but I will admit I haven’t seen these pictures anywhere else, and there are a few that are just amazing and really worth sharing.
1960s Bourbon Street
I’ve been going through a whole ton of older photos I’ve gotten over time and finally getting them digitized and uploaded. This is one of my favorites, so far:

The 500 Club (home of Lilly Christine, the cat girl!), at 500 Bourbon St, is now occupied by the Bourbon Street Blues Company, Al Hirt’s is now (yet another) cheezy Daquari shop.
The 80s continue to taint the innocent.
Okay, Alison’s 17. I’m assuming she’s still fairly innocent, but whatever. Let’s not examine that one too closely.
At this advanced age, she’s going through a nostalgic phase- I suppose it has to do with graduation being ever closer. She keeps talking about “her childhood,” while I try to hide the obvious- that I still consider her to be inside that childhood, while she believes she’s waaaaay beyond it.
This evening brought hand slappy games of the sort that little girls give up around 5th grade (apropos of nothing, “Hot Hands” has its own wiki page. Weird.), and waxing on about “when I was a kid.”
That led on to this Disney movie, Teen Witch, which I sort of remember, but not really. I’ve blocked a lot of really awful movies that she used to love. It was purely defensive, not even conscious, but if I’d actually let things like the Spice Girls’ movie into my brain, it would’ve exploded.
So, too, this gem. “Teen Witch” was made in 1989 (which I’m sure you’ve already figured out, based on the hair), and Ali says she hasn’t seen it in years, but damn if she didn’t know all the songs. When I found this for her on YouTube she shrieked- so did I, but for a different reason:
And, of course, when she begged, I ordered the damn thing on Amazon. I figured she’s not the only one with not a lot of high school time left in which to be nostalgic.
:::sigh:::
